TOPICS: Expanded Uses of Melatonin in Clinical Practice – Not Just a Sleep Aid

SUMMARY: Melatonin’s role as a powerful antioxidant, one of the few that can cross the blood-brain- barrier, combined with oxidative stress proving to be a leading cause in age-related brain dysfunction, has resulted in research into melatonin and its anti-beta-amyloid aggregation effects, neurodegenerative and mitochondrial support, as well as conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, MS and Autism.
Further study into melatonin’s role in pregnancy and fertility, endometriosis and pelvic pain are just a few of the focuses of research in reproductive health. And, that’s not all. Melatonin’s use in GI, immunity, bone health and much more make it an ever expanding tool for functional and integrative practitioners.
BIOS: Tori Hudson, ND - Dr. Hudson has been in practice for more than 30 years and is the medical director of her clinic, A Woman’s Time, in Portland. She graduated from the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in 1984 and has since served the college in many capacities including Professor, Medical Director, Associate Academic Dean, and Academic Dean. She is currently an adjunct clinical professor at NUNM, Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Bastyr University. She is also the founder and co-director of Naturopathic Education and Research Consortium, a nonprofit for accredited naturopathic residencies and Program Director for the Institute of Women’s Health and Integrative Medicine that provides CME and further education for clinicians. Dr. Hudson is also the author of the Women’s Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine and is the director of product research and education for Vitanica.
